Contextual internal links point from each page to the next answer a reader may reasonably need, so every link clarifies a relationship or makes a decision easier.

## Follow the reader’s path.

A link should not exist only because a spreadsheet says every page needs three links.

Suppose someone reads a guide about why a website gets inquiries but few qualified leads. They may next need an explanation of form design, offer messaging, or lead routing. A link to [lead generation](https://scayverstaging.1wp.site/services/marketing/lead-generation/) makes sense if the guide has reached the point where service help is relevant. A link to a generic design page without context probably does not.

Write down the starting question, the next likely question, and the page that answers it. This gives you a reason for each link. It also helps reveal missing pages without forcing a new article for every transition.

## Use words that describe the destination.

“Read our guide to choosing a page for a search question” tells a person what to expect. “Click here” does not. Put the link on a short phrase that describes the destination accurately. Do not turn an entire paragraph into a link or repeat the same exact anchor throughout the site.

Google’s [link best practices](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/links-crawlable) explain that crawlable links and descriptive anchor text help search systems understand linked pages. The same qualities help people using the site, including those navigating by links with assistive technology.

## Connect hubs, guides, and offers.

A hub should organize a topic and point to its useful children. A guide should link back to the hub when a reader may want more options. Related guides can cross-link when the second page answers a genuine follow-up question. An offer page can link to a guide for someone who needs to understand a tradeoff before contacting you.

This pattern makes it easier to navigate without making every page a menu. Keep the body focused on its main job. Add links where they support the explanation. End with one clear primary action.

## Review contextual internal links after changes.

When you rename, combine, or retire a page, update the links that point to it. A redirect can protect an old URL, but a direct link to the current destination is a better experience. Check that the destination still answers the promise made by the anchor. If a guide has changed from a comparison to a checklist, its old link text may mislead.

Run a periodic internal-link review for orphan pages, broken routes, and important services reached only from a sitemap. A page that no visitor can reach through a natural path may not belong in the architecture.

## Review link placement in context.

The best anchor can still fail when it appears before the reader understands why the destination matters. Read the paragraph aloud with the link included. Does it lead naturally to a fuller answer, or does it interrupt the point? Move the link to the sentence where the next question arises. On a long guide, one well-placed link may be more helpful than several repeated links to the same service.

## Map the questions around one service page.

Choose one important service page. List the three questions someone asks before choosing it and the two questions they ask afterward. Link to the pages that answer those questions. If the path is still unclear, [content strategy](https://scayverstaging.1wp.site/services/marketing/content-strategy/) can map the full decision journey before more pages are written.
