Track campaign links with a small, shared naming convention, and record where each link appears, its campaign, and the page it opens.

## Track campaign links for what you need to compare.

Consistency matters more than a clever code. “Email,” “email,” and “newsletter” should not accidentally become three labels for the same channel.

Start with the business question. Are you comparing two newsletters, several social posts, or a partner referral against an ad? Choose source, medium, and campaign names that answer that question. Add further detail only when it will be used in a report.

Google Analytics documents [custom campaign URLs](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10917952?hl=en) using UTM parameters. The parameters identify a visit’s campaign context. They do not by themselves prove that a campaign caused a sale. A visitor may interact with several sources before contacting you.

## Keep the destination clean.

The tagged link should lead to the promised page, not a generic homepage. Test it in a browser after publishing. Check that the page loads, the query string does not break anything, and the CTA still works. A tracking plan is useful only if the customer path remains intact.

Do not add customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, or other private information to a URL. Links are often logged, forwarded, and shared. Use campaign labels, not personal identifiers.

## Maintain one naming sheet.

A simple sheet can list campaign name, source, medium, optional content label, destination, owner, and date. Agree on lowercase style and separators before a campaign launches. Reuse a name for the same campaign, not a different one with a similar offer. When a team member creates a new link, the sheet gives them a pattern to follow.

Avoid tagging internal links within your own site as external campaigns. Doing so can disrupt the original acquisition context in analytics. Use ordinary internal-link measurement for on-site movement.

## Read the report with the site journey.

A campaign that brings many visits but no relevant actions may be reaching the wrong audience, making a weak promise, or landing on an unsuitable page. A small source with fewer visits may bring better inquiries. Compare traffic with the business action you wanted, and read the actual destination before changing the campaign.

The [analytics reporting service](https://scayverstaging.1wp.site/services/maintenance/analytics-reporting/) can help connect campaign naming with the site’s conversion path, but the first decision is yours: which customer action matters?

## Decide when a label expires.

Campaign names should not be reused forever simply because the creative looks similar. If an offer, audience, or destination changes materially, create a new campaign record so later reports can distinguish the work. Keep old links working where possible and note whether a landing page was replaced. A report that combines two different offers under one label cannot tell the team which message helped. The goal is not perfect attribution. It is a record clear enough to support the next campaign decision.

## Model the next campaign on one clean record.

Pick one active campaign. Write its source, medium, name, destination, and intended business action. Check every link for consistency and remove any personal information. Use that record as the model for the next campaign.
