An ecommerce catalog is a set of decisions about how people find products and how staff maintain them, so settle its structure before designing the storefront.

## What is a product and what is a variation?

A beautiful product card cannot fix confusing categories, missing variation details, or duplicate items. Make a small sample catalog that represents your real range, including the exceptions.

Decide which differences belong on one product page and which need separate pages. A shirt in several sizes may be one product with variations. Two different materials with different care, uses, and search intent may deserve separate products. Your choice affects URLs, images, stock, price display, filtering, and reporting.

Record the fields every product needs. Common examples include a customer-facing name, concise benefit, specifications, images, availability, SKU, category, and fulfillment details. Do not require every category to use fields that make no sense for it. A service package, downloadable file, and physical item may need different structures. WooCommerce’s [product documentation](https://woocommerce.com/document/managing-products/) is one platform example of simple and variable product models.

## How will shoppers narrow a large selection?

Use categories for broad browsing paths and attributes for comparisons people actually make. A customer may browse “office chairs” then filter by material, size, or availability. Avoid building filters from internal terminology buyers do not use. Test the labels with actual product questions before adding more facets.

Decide what happens when a category has only one item, when a filter produces no results, and when a product is unavailable. A usable empty state can suggest a nearby category or a way to ask a question. It should not leave the shopper staring at an empty grid. Keep category copy distinct from product copy so each page earns its own search intent.

## Who maintains quality in the ecommerce catalog?

Define how staff add products, approve images, update prices, manage variants, and retire discontinued items. If data comes from an inventory system, identify which fields that system owns. If several people can change stock, the site needs a clear source of truth. Duplicate or contradictory product records confuse customers and fulfillment staff alike.

Create one complete example per product type. Load it into a draft catalog and inspect its archive, product page, cart, and confirmation. Long names and missing images often reveal design problems that a perfect sample never shows. Check mobile filters and keyboard access as part of the catalog, not as a later polish pass.

## What should you bring into the project?

Bring a product export or a small spreadsheet with categories, variations, prices, inventory rules, and images. Mark fields the team can maintain itself and fields that require integration. Decide which products need unique editorial explanation and which can share a governed template.

The right catalog may be simple. A dozen clearly described products do not need an elaborate faceted search interface. A broad catalog needs stronger structure before it needs a more decorative storefront.
