Use the words visitors expect when they look for a task. Website navigation labels are promises about the pages they lead to.

## Begin with visitor language.

“Services” should lead to a clear view of services, and “Pricing” should explain costs or how pricing works. A creative label can feel distinctive to the team that coined it while leaving a first-time visitor unsure where to click.

Collect the phrases people use in inquiries, support requests, site search, and sales conversations. Keep the exact wording before translating it into your internal categories. If visitors ask for website maintenance and your menu says “Continuity,” the wording may create needless hesitation. You can express brand personality in page copy and design without making essential navigation a guessing exercise.

List the tasks people need to complete. Typical tasks include comparing services, learning about the company, viewing work, understanding pricing, and contacting someone. Your site may have different priorities. Group tasks that share a destination, then give each group a short label. Do not begin by fitting every department into the header.

## Test the promise behind each label.

Show someone only the menu labels and ask where they would look for a specific item. “Where would you find help with an existing WordPress site?” is more useful than “Do you like this menu?” If they choose the wrong place, ask what they expected the label to contain. The problem might be the label, the grouping, or the content route itself.

Run this exercise on the footer and mobile menu too. A desktop dropdown can reveal categories with extra space. A compact mobile menu may expose vague top-level labels. The label should still make sense without a hover description or a designer standing nearby.

## Balance breadth and specificity.

Too broad: “Solutions” can conceal services, industries, case studies, or tools. Too narrow: a header with fifteen service names makes every choice compete. Use a clear top-level label and a descriptive second level when the content truly needs that depth. A service overview can help visitors compare categories before entering detailed pages.

Avoid creating duplicate destinations under different names unless the journey requires it. If “Work” and “Portfolio” point to the same archive, choose one primary label. If “Contact” and “Talk to a Specialist” both lead to the same action, decide which belongs in navigation and which belongs in CTA language. Consistency teaches people how the site works.

## Keep website navigation labels accurate as the business changes.

Review navigation when offers, audiences, or support routes change. A label can outlive the content it once described. Assign an owner to check whether every destination still fulfills its promise. If a section is not ready, do not add it to the header as a placeholder. A visible but empty destination weakens trust.

What would someone expect to see after clicking your most unusual label? Write their likely answer. If it differs from the actual page, simplify the label or change the destination.

## Test task finding before styling the menu.

Draft a short menu, then test task finding before polishing the visual treatment. [Information architecture](https://scayverstaging.1wp.site/services/design/information-architecture/) helps when labels expose deeper grouping problems.
