Choose website typography for the work each page asks people to do: display type can set character, but body type carries paragraphs, labels, errors, and long answers.

## Assign roles before choosing styles.

Body type also carries instructions. A good type system helps visitors scan a page, read its details, and tell actions from supporting information, and it keeps working when text wraps, screens narrow, or a visitor zooms in.

List the kinds of text your site needs: page title, section heading, body copy, navigation, button, form label, help text, caption, and metadata. Give each a clear role. A category label should not look like a second page title. An error message should not disappear into caption styling. A CTA should be recognizable without making every label oversized.

Test the system with actual copy. The longest service name and a detailed FAQ answer will reveal more than a sample headline. If a design requires writers to shorten accurate language to keep every card identical, the type and layout system need reconsideration.

## Prioritize readable paragraphs.

Watch line length, spacing, contrast, and the relationship between headings and body text. A very wide column can make long paragraphs hard to follow. A narrow column can turn ordinary words into distracting stacks. Choose a content width and type size that fit the page’s reading job, then test on real screens rather than relying on a single mockup.

Headings should reveal the argument when scanned. Do not use a display face or decorative treatment that makes key questions difficult to read. Give paragraphs enough separation to show topic changes without turning every sentence into an isolated block. Typography and editorial structure work together.

## Include interface and accessibility states.

Check form labels, validation text, placeholder examples, menu items, button states, and links. These short pieces of text often carry more consequence than the hero headline because they direct action. Make focus and error states visible. Let users enlarge text without losing content or controls. Test narrow screens and browser zoom with realistic labels.

If the brand uses a characterful display face, pair it with a practical body and interface choice. Limit the number of type roles. A complex site needs a reliable system editors can reuse, not a new font treatment for every page family.

## Judge the full page, not the font specimen.

Review a service page, an article, and a form in the same type system. Ask whether each page can establish priority without changing fonts constantly. Read a long paragraph aloud while looking at it. Notice where line breaks, small captions, or low contrast slow you down. Then revise the system rather than patching only that page.

What kind of text will appear most often on your site? Choose for that text first. The visual personality can grow around it.

## Test the type in real use.
