Merge two website pages when they answer the same visitor question and neither gives a reader a distinct reason to visit it.

## Compare purpose before wording.

Keep them separate when the audiences, decisions, scope, or required information differ in a way a reader would notice. The test is not whether two pages share keywords. It is whether a person would be better served by one complete answer or by two focused routes.

Place the pages side by side. For each, write the visitor’s question, the answer, the next action, and the information unique to that route. Two pages may look different because one has a long introduction and the other has more headings, yet both may say the same thing. In that case, revise the stronger page to answer the question fully and consider retiring the weaker page.

The opposite can happen. Two pages may use similar words because they concern the same service, while serving different stages. A category page helps a visitor compare design services. A single web-design page explains the specific engagement. Shared vocabulary does not make them duplicates if the decision jobs differ.

## Look for signals of unnecessary separation.

Watch for repeated FAQs, nearly identical deliverable lists, interchangeable headlines, and internal links that bounce between pages without adding information. Location and industry pages deserve particular scrutiny. Changing a place or sector name is not enough. Each page should address a real local or industry-specific need that changes the decision.

Another signal is editorial confusion. If your team cannot decide which page should receive a new fact, the boundaries may not be clear. Write a one-sentence page purpose for each route. If the sentences are indistinguishable, consolidate or redefine.

## Protect useful paths during a merge.

Before changing URLs, check whether either page receives relevant visitors, has external links, appears in campaigns, or is bookmarked in customer materials. Decide which URL should remain. Map the old route to the most relevant destination, then update internal links, navigation, and metadata. A redirect to a generic homepage can strand someone who expected a specific answer.

Keep the best information from both pages. A merge should improve usefulness, not merely reduce the count. Organize the combined page around the visitor’s question. Remove contradictions and stale claims. If one page served a secondary audience, preserve a direct section or a related route that still serves them.

## Know when rewriting beats merging.

Sometimes two pages overlap because one lacks depth. A service page and a comparison guide can coexist if the guide fairly explains a decision while the service page defines the work. An industry page can coexist with a general service page if it shows the industry’s workflows, constraints, and buyer questions with evidence. Rewrite for distinct intent only when you have enough real material to sustain it.

What would a visitor lose if one page disappeared? If the answer is “nothing except another route to the same paragraph,” consolidation is likely the better choice.

## Record the URL decision for each overlap.

Use the [website page inventory](https://scayverstaging.1wp.site/resources/website-decisions/website-page-inventory/) to flag overlaps and record the URL decision. [Information architecture](https://scayverstaging.1wp.site/services/design/information-architecture/) helps decide which page should own the topic.
